Node-locking is the proven approach for ensuring that software won't run on unlicensed users' machines. However simple locking to, say, the MAC address is often no longer adequate: some system parameters can now be configured by the system software, virtualization means system parameters can change over time for legitimate users, and legitimate users want to relocate their licenses quickly and easily.
